Getting on a College Coach's Radar

With the "live" recruiting period ending a couple weeks ago, the months of May and early June can be confusing for prospects trying to make a name for themselves with college coaches. Here are a few tips on how to get on their recruiting lists before the summer evaluation period begins.

  1. Make a Summer Recruiting List - Sit down with your parents, coaches and advisors to create a summer recruiting list. This list should be a large numer of schools that you would like to learn more about this summer and have interest in becoming part of their program. Make sure this is a diverse list of schools from an athletic and academic standpoint and most importantly, make sure these programs are a realistic option for you. Using the CS Hoops College Database and your Recruiting Boards is the easiest and best way to do this.
  2. Updated Profile & Video - Make it easy for college coaches to get information on you as a prospect. Supply them with updated email addresses, phone numbers and grade information as well as recent video for evaluation purposes. Also make sure to include your summer schedule that includes camps and AAU tournaments so that coaches can know where to watch you play. All of this can be accessible to a college coach from your CS Hoops Prospect Profile.
  3. Who to Contact - Your best bet is to try and contact assistant coaches. These staff members are usually the coaches who do the majority of the recruiting, especially early on in the process. If you can develop a relationship with an assistant coach, then you may have a chance to get an in-person evaluation from a head coach later this summer.
